If you are like many families in our area, you are probably preparing to host a backyard barbeque some time this Memorial Day weekend, (weather permitting, of course.)
Try some of these ideas to impress your guest with your patriotic decorations and food.
The Red, White and Blue Garden
Create some patriotic container gardens and scatter them throughout your outdoor area. If you have a bunch of kids coming over, number the containers or hide little surprises in them like a scavenger hunt.
To give your container gardens a patriot feel use flowers that bloom in red, white and blue.
- Red: Potentilla ‘Gibson’s Scarlet’ (or dianthus, geraniums, hydrangeas, zinnias, begonias, mums)
- White: Clematis (or geraniums, salvias, mums, snapdragons, daisies, impatiens)
- Blue: Grape hyacinth (or morning glory, verbena, blue bells)
The Red, White and Blue Decorations
Provided a big rain storm is not threatening to ruin your backyard party, adding red, white and blue streamers can really make your patio or deck look festive. Streamers are inexpensive, easy to hang and can be a fun family project.
You can use those same dollar store streamers to make a fun table runner for your picnic table. The best part: if they get spilled on, you don’t have to worry about it!
Don’t forget to dress up the rest of the table with red, white and blue plates, napkins and plastic utensils. If you still feel the table needs something, make a mini container garden with your red, white and blue flowers and use it as a center piece.
The Red, White and Blue Themed Food
All barbecues call for the American classics like a hamburger and hot dog on a bun, but it may be time to add a few extras to your menu.
Start off the party with a flag shaped platter, using fruits, veggies and crackers that are red, white and blue in color. The one pictured uses watermelon, pepper jack cheese and blue berries. You could easily replace the water melon with pepperoni and the blue berries with black (blueish) olives or something else. Get creative!
For your main course, why not serve some Coca-Cola BBQ Ribs? Can’t get more American than that, right? Using this recipe, in one hour you can have delectable, melt-in-your-mouth ribs!
For dessert try red, white and blue cake in a jar. Desserts served in jars are always fun for outdoor, summer parties. This recipe gives your tasty, kid-friendly dessert a patriotic theme. Click here for the recipe.
Adding a few or all of these things will make your Memorial Day barbecue one to remember!
